Reducing Your Energy Bills - Central Heating Tips
Despite the recession, the cost of out energy is constantly rising and we need to pro-actively think of ways to minimise the central heating costs. Take a look at the 5 tips below to help you work out ways to keep costs to a minimum…so you have more money to spend on something else! Even small changes will add up to big savings over the course of this cold winter!
1. The best way to start saving money is to find your boiler and check that the hot water thermostat isn’t turned up too high. Of course, use your own judgement, but you will probably find that you don’t need to go below 120 degrees with the thermostat temperature.
2. Its something that many people neglect, but in addition to changing the temperature, you should also clean out the filters of your boiler to make sure that nothing is preventing it from working properly. Of course, no-one wants to find their boiler filters filthy, so it may be the case that you need to call the professionals out to take a look and give it a boiler service at the same time, just so you can rest assured that your central heating is working properly.
3. As well as noting the above, leaks can be a common problem in a home with central heating, so you may want to double check for anything untoward so you can mention it to your heating supplier. It is true when people say that any disconnection problems or suchlike could be adding up to 25% to your energy bill, so you need to make sure all outlets are sealed. Don’t worry about playing around with the appliance yourself, as that’s what the central heating experts are there for – call them up and they will send an engineer round. While the engineer is at your home, ask him to check the ducts too to make sure your system is running as efficiently as possible.
4. Just by turning the thermostat down it can knock quite a bit of money off your energy bills. Trust in me when I say this really does add up. The monthly bill will reflect all the changes you have made, and you can feel confident that you have done the right thing.
5. While we are on the subject of thermostats, consider replacing yours if it is not programmable. The reason is, you can set the thermostat so the temperature setting in your house is lower at night than during the day, when you are awake. The great thing about this is that you can have a lovely warm house just before you arrive home, as the thermostat will only program heating and hot water as you want it to be. These programmable thermostats aren’t very expensive, and you can either install one yourself or call the trusty engineer out to save time.
Just by spending some time reading these tips and deciding to take notice could make all the difference to your central heating bills. The advice included here isn’t meant to take you days and days to implement- just reserve a few hours to get them done. There has never been a better time to start making those necessary changes to your energy bills.
